Jonathan joined the team in 2016. He has responsibility for the completion of hires from the quotation stages right through to completing the event on site.
What’s a typical day in your current role at TSS?
A typical day for me always starts with a nice cup of tea (I'm still a techie at heart) after that it's anyone's guess! Aside from managing the day-to-day operations of the Hire Department, my day will normally be some mix of customer visits, calls, emails and quotes, show and system design, keeping up-to-date with industry developments, giving/receiving training, managing larger hires onsite and whatever else the week throws at us!
What’s your favourite part of your job?
My favourite part of the job is coming up with imaginative ways to realise our customers vision for their projects. I might be a glutton for punishment, but I love it when a secondary school comes to me with an idea that probably belongs in a West End Show, and we manage to work out a way of making it happen on budget!
What did you do before joining TSS? Why/how did you get into the industry?
As a youth I was heavily involved in theatre and playing in bands, but I was also passionate about science and technology. As a result, I originally trained as a sound engineer, getting my degree in Sound Technology from LIPA. After leaving Uni I started my own production company, producing records and running recording and rehearsal studios, but I never lost my passion for theatre work. When I moved to Yorkshire I worked in education for several years as a performing arts technician at secondary schools before returning to the industry with TSS.
What are your favourite/most interesting/most unusual gigs/jobs you’ve done in the past?
I love the variety of my job. As a musician I wrote music for TV deodorant ads,as a producer I recorded albums for great artists, as a sound designer I put didgeridoo samples into speed control car prototypes. As a theatre tech I have built custom spaceship sets, as a lighting designer I have turned huge buildings into laser screens, and as a video tech I have built massive Space Invaders out of LED video wall for sci-fi club nights. It's a lot of fun...
What do you do in your spare time?
When I occasionally get some spare time I tend to be spending it with my wife and two tiny children. I play bass and synths in an electro-trip-hop-grunge band, and love to snowboard whenever I can.
What TV show is your guilty pleasure?
I'm a massive sci-fi geek so I don't care what anyone says...Babylon 5 was awesome.
Who would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with?
It would have to be the wife and kids (they might read this), although someone who could fashion a nice bathroom with running water from rocks and bamboo would probably be more useful.
